Box ScorePHOENIX, Ariz. – Four Broncs reached double-figures in scoring, but the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team fell to the Grand Canyon University Antelopes 64-59 on Thursday at GCU Arena.
Junior
Shaquille Hines led the Broncs (9-18, 3-8 WAC) with 12 points on 6-of-13 shooting to go with nine rebounds. Sophomore
Janari Joesaar posted his sixth double-double of the season with 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting and 10 rebounds. Senior
Shaquille Boga also scored 11 points. Freshman
Dan Kimasa scored 10 points with eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Kimasa, who already has the program record for blocks by a freshman, now has 40 blocks, passing
Danny Salisbury (39, 1978-79), a 1979 second round draft pick by the Golden State Warriors, for fifth most in a single-season in program history.
Joshua Braun led the Antelopes (16-11, 7-3 WAC) with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting to go with eight rebounds and two blocks.
De'Andre Davis also scored 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting to go with six assists.
Kimasa scored the Broncs' first five points and seven of their first 11 while helping the Broncs build a 16-6 lead.
After the 'Lopes went on a 7-2 run to cut the lead in half, Joesaar nailed a three and Kimasa made a free throw to push the Broncs' lead to 22-13.
The Broncs still led by nine at 24-15 on a Joesaar layup when Davis made a layup to spark an 8-0 run as the 'Lopes pulled with one.
After the teams traded baskets, though, Hines hit three buckets and Kimasa made one as the Broncs closed the half on an 8-2 run to go up 34-27.
The Broncs built their largest lead of the game at 49-38 with 9:50 remaining on a layup by freshman
Elijah Watson, but Davis scored eight points to power a 12-2 run as the 'Lopes pulled to within 51-50 with 5:34 to go.
The Broncs scored the next six points to go up 57-50 on a Hines layup two minutes later, but the 'Lopes closed the game on a 14-2 run to come from behind for the win.
The Broncs play their final regular season road game on Saturday at 8:05 p.m. when they visit Utah Valley.
