EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team returns home to face the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
Admission is free to the public and fans are welcomed to attend.
Last Time OutThe Broncs fell 3-4 to the Texas State Bobcats at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
The Bobcats (2-3) took the early advantage in doubles as they won on courts two and three. The Broncs (3-5) played the doubles matches close as they fell 4-6 in both matches.
Sophomore
Katia Stavroulaki recorded her sixth win of the dual match season with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Ana Laura Gutierrez at the No. 2 singles position. Freshman
Dominique Esparza then tied the match as she picked up her first win at the No. 1 singles spot with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Monica Pieratt.
Junior
Reegan Greenwood gave the Broncs the lead with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Shannon Beckett at the No. 5 spot but the Bobcats answered with a win on court three. In the decisive match, freshman
Natacha Minc dropped her first set to Katy Collins at the No. 6 spot but answered with a 6-1 win in the second set before falling in the final set 1-6, giving the Bobcats the victory.
Scouting the IslandersThe Islanders are 5-2 on the season heading into Thursday's match. While they are 4-1 at home this season, the Islanders are 1-0 as the away team and 0-1 in their lone neutral site match.
The Islanders have five players with winning records and more than four wins each. As a team, the Islanders are 23-10 in singles. Maider Martin is currently riding a five-match win streak as she leads the team with a 5-1 record at the No. 4 singles position.
Judit Vives is 4-1 at the No. 1 position while Jelena Dzinic has a 4-2 record while playing at the No. 2 position. Celia Rodriguez has played all her matches at the No. 3 position and has posted a 4-2 record. Chelsea Horan is 4-0 at the No. 5 position but is 0-3 while playing at the No. 6 position.
In doubles, Martin and Rodriguez lead the Islanders with a 4-2 record at the No. 1 spot and have won two straight matches. Vives and Kerry Galhos have a 4-1 record while playing their matches at the No. 3 spot.
The SeriesThe Broncs are 2-22 against the Islanders all-time in a series that dates back to 2000.
Both of these teams faced off against each other on February 8 in Corpus Christi. The Islanders came away with a 6-1 victory.
The last time the Broncs recorded a win over the Islanders was on February 17, 2007 as they picked up the 4-3 win in Corpus Christi.
GlobetrottersThe Broncs currently have nine student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries including Colombia, England, France, Greece, Mexico and the United States.
