Box ScorePhoto GalleryEDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team scored seven runs off of four different pitchers in the sixth inning to come from behind and beat the Lamar University Cardinals 11-8 on Saturday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The wins marks the 600th in the career of Broncs head coach
Manny Mantrana, who, in his 19th season as a head coach, is 600-410-1 (.593). 149 of those wins have comes at UTPA, where is now in his seventh season.
With the Broncs (7-3) down 8-4 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Cardinals' (6-4) first reliever,
Billy Love, plunked freshman
Isaac Gonzalez.
Brett Brown came in and walked junior
Cole Loncar on three pitches. The next pitcher,
Brandon Kirkham (0-1), plunked junior
Jesus Garcia to load the bases. One out later, sophomore
Jacob Huckabay drew a four-pitch walk. Then, with the count 3-1 on sophomore
Victor Garcia Jr., the Cardinals brought in
Ryan Cawthon from the bullpen, who immediately threw ball four to force-in a run. One out after that, freshman McAllen Memorial alum
Manny Loredo hit a two-run single to tie the game. Junior
Scott Mercer worked a six-pitch walk, and then Gonzalez notched his first collegiate hit with go-ahead two-run single to left field.
Derek Wade entered the game next and threw two wild pitched to allow Mercer to score to make it 11-8.
Three Broncs had multi-hit games, as Loredo, Huckabay and senior
Logan Landon each had two hits. Huckabay also drew two walks while driving in a run and scoring twice. Loredo had a career-high three RBI with one run scored while Landon scored twice. It was Landon's sixth-straight multi-hit game, during which time he is 13-for-22 (.591). It was Loredo's third-straight multi-hit game, during which time he is 8-for-13 (.615).
Loncar also performed well, reaching base four times in five trips out of the leadoff spot by going 1-for-2 with a career-high three walks, an RBI and a run scored.
The win went to junior Roma alum
Isaac Martinez (1-1), who gave up one of the Cardinals' two sixth inning runs.
The bullpen slammed the door over the final three innings, as freshman
Johnny Gonzalez and junior
Matt Rigby each struck out two in a perfect inning before sophomore Nikki Rowe alum
Andrew Padron pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save, tied with
Mike Cox (2000),
Richard Crenshaw (1996) and
Jason Loreth (1985) for the ninth-highest single-season total in program history. Padron now has seven career saves, tied with Crenshaw (1996-97) for the eighth highest total in program history.
The Broncs and Cardinals complete this three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. Gates open at 11 a.m.
