Box ScorePhoto GalleryEDINBURG – For the third game in a row, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team used a big inning, in this case five runs in the third, to beat the Lamar University Cardinals 6-4 and complete the series sweep on Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
It is the first time the Broncs (8-3) have completed a sweep of the Cardinals (6-5) since 1988 and the first time the Broncs have won three games against the Cardinals in a season since 1997.
Unlike the first two games, when the Broncs used a five-run eighth and a seven-run sixth to complete come from behind victories, the Broncs scored first and never relinquished the lead.
Freshman
Isaac Gonzalez and junior
Cole Loncar started the third inning with walks. After a sacrifice bunt, senior
Logan Landon extended his hitting streak to eight games with an RBI-single, and then sophomore
Jacob Huckabay cleared the bases with a triple. After freshman McAllen Memorial alum
Manny Loredo reached on an infield-single,
Will Hibbs (1-1) uncorked a wild pitch to score Huckabay and move Loredo to second. One out later, junior
Scott Mercer singled-in Loredo to cap the inning with the score 5-0.
Mercer recorded his first multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. Loncar finished 2-for-4 with a walk. Sophomore
Victor Garcia Jr. also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3.
That was enough for freshman
Robert Quinonez (1-0) to earn his first-career win, as he struck out four in seven innings while scattering four hits and two walks. All of the runs against him came in the fifth, as
Kevin Santana led off with a bad-hop single up the middle and
Tyler Sullivan tripled to the wall to drive-in a run.
Brendan Satran followed with a perfectly placed bunt down the first base line to drive-in a run and reach base. After a walk and a sacrifice bunt, Satran beat the throw to the plate when
Reed Seeley hit a hopper back to the mound, making it 5-3.
The Broncs added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI-double by Loncar, which the Cardinals got back in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by
Brandon Provost.
Sophomore Nikki Rowe alum
Andrew Padron pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save, tied for the fourth highest single-season total in program history. He now has eight career saves, tied for the seventh highest total in program history.
The Broncs hit the road for their next four games, starting Tuesday at 2 p.m. when they visit Incarnate Word.
