Box ScoreSTOCKTON, Calif. – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team tied its season-high in scoring while pounding out a season-high 16 hits to beat the University of the Pacific Tigers 12-10 on Monday at Klein Family Field.
The Broncs (11-11) scored the majority of their runs in the second and seventh innings, putting up a six-spot in the second before adding five more in the seventh.
In the second, with the Broncs down 4-1, freshman
Isaac Gonzalez drew a bases loaded walk. Then, after a wild pitch scored a run, the Broncs re-loaded the bases, setting up a three-run double by senior
Logan Landon and an RBI-single by sophomore
Jacob Huckabay to make it 7-4. It was Landon's second RBI-hit of the game, as he drove-in the Broncs' first run with a single in the first.
Landon finished 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored. Junior
Cole Loncar also had three hits, including a triple, to go with a run scored. Three other Broncs had multi-hit games, as freshman McAllen Memorial alum
Manny Loredo and juniors
Scott Mercer and
Correy Davis each had two hits. Mercer and Davis each scored twice, while Loredo scored once.
Brett Sullivan gave the Tigers (4-18) one of those runs back right away with his second home run of the game in the bottom of the inning. The first was a three-run shot as part of a four-run first. Sullivan finished 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored while
Gio Brusa went 4-for-5 with a double, a triple, and two runs scored.
After the Tigers took the lead with three runs (one earned) in the sixth, the Broncs got a bases-clearing double from senior
Jesus Garcia and a two-run single by sophomore
Victor Garcia Jr. to take the lead back at 12-8.
That made a winner of junior
Matt Rigby (2-1), who pitched two innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out one.
Sophomore Nikki Rowe alum
Andrew Padron pitched 1.2 perfect innings for his seventh save, tied for the third highest single-season total in program history. Padron now has nine career saves, tied for the fifth highest total in program history.
Justin Giovannoni (0-1) recorded the loss after giving up three runs on three hits and one walk in two innings.
The Broncs return home on Friday at 7 p.m. when they open up a three-game series against Seattle U at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Gates open at 6.
