SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women's tennis team faces the Nicholls State University Colonels on Friday in a neutral site match at the Mabry Tennis Center, located on the campus of the University of the Incarnate Word.
Last Time OutThe Broncs fell 2-5 to the University of Texas-El Paso Miners at the El Paso Tennis Club on March 22.
The Broncs (7-9) recorded a win in doubles as the team of
Katia Stavroulaki and
Reegan Greenwood defeated Davina Meza and Jeannez Daniel 8-6 on court one but the Miners (9-3) went on to clinch the doubles point with wins on courts two and three.
The Broncs got a pair of victories as
Mariana Ranzahuer recorded a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Daphne Visscher at No. 5 singles and
Natacha Minc posted a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Matilda Tench at No. 6 singles.
The Miners went on to win the rest of the matches to clinch the match.
Scouting the ColonelsThe Colonels are 11-3 entering Friday's match with the Broncs. They had their eight-match winning streak snapped on Wednesday after falling to the No. 41 LSU Tigers 1-5.
Stephanie Barnett leads the Colonels with a 10-2 record in the dual match season. Barnett has played mainly at No. 1 singles while posting a 9-2 record. Her other win came at No. 2 singles.
Marie Aubert (8-3), Isla Brock (8-1) and Kateryna Nakonechna each have posted eight wins this season.
In doubles, Brock and Nakonechna lead the Colonels with a 8-1 record while playing at all three positions. They have a 1-0 record at No. 1, a 4-1 record at No. 2 and a 3-0 record at No. 3 doubles.
The SeriesThe Broncs are 3-6 all-time against the Colonels in series that dates back to 1999. These two teams faced each other last season as the Colonels came away with the 4-1 win on March 12 in Thibodaux, Louisiana.
The last time the Broncs defeated the Colonels came on February 24, 2007 when they won 4-3 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center, which was also the last time the Broncs faced them at home.
GlobetrottersThe Broncs currently have nine student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries including Colombia, England, France, Greece, Mexico and the United States.
