ABILENE – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team looks to snap their four-match losing streak as they face off against the Abilene Christian Wildcats on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Eagar Tennis Center.
Last Time OutThe Broncs men's tennis team fell to the No. 67 Southern Methodist University Mustangs 0-7 at the SMU Tennis Complex.
The Broncs (2-6) played their doubles matches close but fell 6-4 on courts one and two giving the doubles point to the Mustangs (12-2). The match on court three went unfinished but was tied at five when the doubles point was clinched.
The Mustangs continued their momentum, as they swept through singles matches in straight sets. The closest set came at No. 6 singles, where freshman
Ethan Ammon dropped his first set 6-1 to Julio Olaya but forced a tiebreaker in the second set before falling 7-6.
Back-to-Back Athletes of the WeekFor the second week in a row, the Broncs had a student-athlete named Western Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week as sophomore
Juan Cruz Soria earned the honors.
Soria picked up his second dual match singles victory of the season after defeating USM's Surat and it was his ninth win overall. Soria also picked up his third doubles victory after teaming up with Crvelin at the No. 2 position.
Freshman
Koby Jansen earned athlete of the week honors last week for his performance against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Scouting the WildcatsThe Wildcats enter Saturday's match with a 4-9 record after defeating Incarnate Word 4-3 on Friday.
Nico Agritelley leads the Wildcats with an 8-5 record on the dual match season. He has posted records of 2-0 at the No. 2 position, 5-5 at the No. 3 position and 1-0 at the No. 4 position. He has won three matches in a row.
Marco Bensley has a 6-7 record while playing at the No. 5 and 6 positions. He has posted a 4-3 record at the No. 6 spot while picking up two wins in the No. 5 spot.
In doubles, Agritelley and Guilherme Gesser have teamed up to post a 6-5 record while playing mainly in the No. 1 spot. Agritelley has also teamed up with Henry Adams to post a 3-0 record at the No. 2 spot.
The SeriesThe Broncs are 4-6 all-time against the Wildcats in a series that dates back to 1988. The last time the Broncs and Wildcats faced each other was on February 9, 2007. The Broncs came away with the 5-1 victory in Abilene.
GlobetrottersThe Broncs have seven student-athletes representing six countries including, Argentina, Australia, Croatia, Mexico, Spain and Trinidad and Tobago.
Next UpThe Broncs are back in action on March 18 when they take on No. 25 Oklahoma State in a neutral site match in Dallas.
