Men's Tennis Halts Skid With Win Over Abilene Christian

ABILENE – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team snapped their four-match losing streak as they defeated the Abilene Christian University Wildcats 4-3 at the Eager Tennis Center on Saturday.

"This was an important road match at this point in the season for our boys to persevere, struggle and finish," Broncs head coach Brandon Stokes said. "I am proud of their relentless energy and resilient spirit."

The Broncs (3-6) dropped their doubles matches on court one and two to give the Wildcats (4-11) the doubles points.

The Broncs responded to the challenge as they answered back in singles competition. Sophomore Juan Cruz Soria got UTPA on the board with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Guilherme Gesser at the No. 1 position.

After the Wildcats picked up victories on court six and two, freshman Miguel Alvarez-Hevia added another point at No. 4 singles. Alvarez-Hevia dropped his first set 3-6 to Henry Adams but bounced back with a 6-2 victories in the second and third sets for the Broncs' second point.

Freshman Koby Jansen tied the match with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 victory over Jason Proctor at No. 3 singles and then it was freshman Nikola Crvelin who clinched it for the Broncs at No. 5 singles. Crvelin opened with a 6-2 win in the first set before dropping the second set 4-6 to Paul Domanski. Crvelin then closed out the match with a 6-2 win in the third set giving the Broncs the final point.

"After we lost the doubles point, I challenged the boys to focus better between points and raise their level of play for singles," Stokes said. "We were determined to own each of our individual singles courts. I am thrilled for the boys to beat another in-state rival. This makes the road trip home more fun and this enables us to hone in on our strengths and areas of improvements as we start a stretch of spring break matches in 11 days."

The Broncs get that spring break stretch on March 18 when they face off against No. 25 Oklahoma State University in a neutral site match in Dallas.
