EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis team defeated the No. 8 Laredo Community College Palominos 7-0 on Thursday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The Palominos (1-7) are ranked eighth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Junior/Community College rankings.
"It always feels good to win," Broncs head coach
Brandon Stokes said. "The best feeling is the way we compete. We are starting to play at a higher level and sustaining it. The boys are having fun competing no matter what kind of conditions we are in. Laredo's coach is first class and their kids are terrific competitors and to be able to do what we did today makes it more impressive. I say that with complete humility because of how much respect I have for coach Jaime."
The Broncs (7-10) started doubles with a win on court three as
Nikola Crvelin and
Elliot Johnstone defeated Cody Arnold and Eddie Marquez 6-3.
Ethan Ammon and
Hector Ramirez then clinched the doubles point for the Broncs after they defeated Jose De Sario and Gavin Givel 6-4 on court two.
Koby Jansen and
Juan Cruz Soria completed the sweep of doubles with a 7-5 win over Arturo Pinazo and Gabriel Evans on court one.
The Broncs did not drop a set as they swept through singles to clinch the match. Ammon started things off with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Arnold at No. 5 singles. Jansen followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Marquez at No. 3 singles and it was Soria who clinched the match for the Broncs after defeating Evans 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot.
Crvelin trailed Grivel 1-4 in the first set before winning five straight points to take the first set 6-4 and then closed out his match with a 6-0 win in the second set. Johnstone picked up a win at No. 4 singles after he defeated Josh Regaldo 6-3, 6-2 and Ramirez closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win over De Sario to complete the sweep.
"The boys are competing and loving the process," Stokes said. "That is the main thing. I understand that is the essence of our family and that is who we are. That is the unbreakable bond that we have. It is an honor to be around and to witness from all these boys. It is fun to be a part of this process."
The Broncs are back on the court on Friday when they host the University of Texas San Antonio Roadrunners at 2 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
