Men's Tennis Set For Semifinals Match With No. 3 Kansas City on Saturday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 2 University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's tennis faces off against the No. 3 University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos in the semifinals round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Plaza Tennis Center.
 
The winner will play for the WAC Championship on Sunday.
 
Last Time Out
The Broncs closed out its regular season with a 0-4 loss to the No. 57 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders.
 
The Broncs (9-12) fell behind early on in the match as the Islanders (17-6) won on courts one and two to clinch the doubles point.
 
In singles, the Islanders opened with wins on courts two, six and four to close out the match. Juan Cruz Soria won his first set against 97th ranked Peter Nagy court one and Koby Jansen was up a set against Guillaume Rauseo on court three before the matches were stopped once the Islanders clinched the match.
 
Scouting the Kangaroos
The Kangaroos are 12-11 on the season and 2-3 in conference play. The Kangaroos closed out their season with a 6-1 win over Northwest Missouri State on April 16.
 
Conner Edwards and Airam Castellano are tied for the team lead with 19 wins this season tying the program record for wins in a season. Edwards, who plays mainly at the No. 5 position, went 1-3 in conference play while Castellano, who has played all of his matches at the No. 1 spot, went 2-2.
 
Mike Psarros has 18 wins on the season while going 15-8 in dual match competition while playing at the No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 positions. Andrey Smirnov has added 18 wins on the season while playing at the No. 2 position and Uldis Gaismins has posted 13 wins while mainly playing at the No. 4 position.
 
In doubles, Gaismins and Smirnov have teamed up for 19 wins, which tied the program record, and have posted a 14-6 record in dual match competition while playing all their matches at the No. 2 spot. Castellano and Psarros have a 16-14 record on the season while posting a 13-10 record in dual match competition. Gaismins and Smirnov have posted a 4-0 record in conference play while Castellano and Psarros went 3-1.  
 
The Series
The Broncs are 2-0 all-time against the Kangaroos after playing them for the first time last season. The Broncs beat Kansas City 4-0 last season at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
The Broncs defeated the Kangaroos 4-3 back on March 29 as they closed out the first WAC Cluster at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
After dropping the doubles point, the Broncs won on courts one, two, three and five. 
 
Globetrotters
The Broncs have seven student-athletes representing six countries including, Argentina, Australia, Croatia, Mexico, Spain and Trinidad and Tobago.
 
Next Up
The winner will play for the WAC Championship on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Plaza Tennis Center.
