Box ScoreLAS CRUCES, N.M. – Down 10-5 after three innings, the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs baseball team rallied back for a 15-13 victory over the New Mexico State University Aggies on Sunday at Presley Askew Field.
The Broncs (19-29-1, 4-19-1 WAC) and Aggies (11-35-1, 7-16-1 WAC) combined for 77 runs in the three-game series, making this the Broncs' highest scoring stretch of three games in a series since May 11-12, 2009, when the Broncs and Northern Colorado combined for 118 runs in three games.
The Broncs finished with 19 hits, their highest total since April 15, 2012 at North Dakota, when the Broncs also had 19 hits. Junior
Cole Loncar went a career-best 5-for-6 with an RBI and three runs scored. Senior
Logan Landon went 4-for-6 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored.
The Broncs scored in every inning except the third, but it was freshman Harlingen South alum
Zach Martinez that stopped the Aggies bats in the middle of the game, entering the game in the third and pitching a career-high 5.2 innings, putting up zeros in the fifth through seventh innings while the Broncs' offense rallied.
Sophomore
Jaocb Huckabay hit his second home run in as many games, a two-run shot in the fifth. The Broncs scored a run on an error in the sixth. Landon tied the game with a two-out double in the seventh. The Broncs took the lead on a one-out single by
Victor Garcia Jr. against
Matt Loeffler (2-4) in the eighth. One out later, Huckabay added on with an RBI-single that made it 13-11.
Huckabay finished the series with eight RBI.
The Aggies broke through against Martinez in the eighth, when, with the bases loaded and two outs,
Derek Umphres tied the game with a single. One batter later, with the bases reloaded, senior
Alex Henson (2-1) came in to get
Michael Paulson to fly out to keep the game tied.
The Broncs responded by loading the bases with two outs in the ninth, scoring on a bases loaded walk and a balk.
Freshman
Johnny Gonzalez pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.
The Broncs jumped on the board right away when junior
Correy Davis launched his first-career home run, a three run shot, in the top of the first.
The Aggies responded immediately in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of three walks, four hits and two wild pitches to take a 6-3 lead.
The Broncs got two back in the second on a double by Landon and a single by junior
Scott Mercer, but the Aggies scored two in the second and two in the third to build a 10-5 lead.
The Broncs kick-off their final series of the season when they return to Edinburg Baseball Stadium for the first of three games against Utah Valley on Thursday at 7 p.m. Gates open at 6.
