UTPA Athletics Hires Lance Morgan as General Manager of Corporate Sales and Sponsorships

EDINBURG – The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday the hiring of Lance Morgan, who has an extensive background in regional and national sales, as General Manager of Corporate Sales and Sponsorships.

In his new position, Morgan is responsible for cultivating and maintaining all corporate partnerships with the UTPA, and soon University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), athletic department.

"Lance will provide an immediate impact to our leadership team and our next phase of growth as we transition into UTRGV athletics," UTPA Director of Athletics Chris King said. "His experience and expertise will complement the strengths of the existing external staff and he brings a strong track record from the corporate multimedia side to stimulate our current and future corporate partnerships and revenue enhancement. Lance will play a pivotal role in our future plans to create new revenue streams for the production of a UTRGV Sports Network throughout the RGV and the State of Texas."

Morgan was with Time Warner Cable Media Sales from August 2006 through October 2013, serving as the Regional Director of Sales for the last four and a half years. In that role, Morgan directed six sales offices in five television markets across Texas, including the Rio Grande Valley, Laredo, Corpus Christi, El Paso and Beaumont/Port Arthur. He oversaw a team of five sales managers, 36 account executives, 10 video producers, 10 sales assistants and four research/promotions specialists. In all, his department was responsible for creating $25 million in revenue, running at 66 percent cash flow expectation vs. expenses.

Morgan initially served as the General Manager with Time Warner Cable, overseeing the Rio Grande Valley and Laredo sales offices. He led Laredo to the "Most Improved Division" title in 2007. His consistently strong performances with both offices led to his promotion.

Morgan came to the Rio Grande Valley from Los Angeles, Calif., where he spent two years as the General Sales Manager for Charter Communications, directing seven offices in the area to bring in $42 million in revenue. He earned that position after delivering an annual growth of 15 percent in L.A.'s largest office while serving for two years as Advertising Sales Manager.

"I'm extremely excited to become part of the Athletic Department during this time of growth and transition," Morgan said. "I have been impressed with Chris and his vision of what can be achieved, as well as the entire athletics staff in their efforts to bring that vision to life over the past few years. We have an opportunity to build on this foundation as we become UTRGV and offer the local business community even more than before, as well as get more involved with opportunities on a regional and national level. I'm really looking forward to working with existing business partners and bringing in new partnerships to help them in their marketing efforts. I get excited when I think about how growing those relationships will have such a positive impact for our business partners, the UTRGV community, and the athletic department, but I am even more excited for how this can positively impact our student-athletes."

After graduating from the University of Texas with Bachelor of Science in Radio-Television-Film in December 1992, Morgan immediately began a career in sales as an account executive with KIOX AM/FM in Bay City. He was then the General Sales Manager with The Shelton Agency, Inc. in Riverside, Calif., an account executive with CableTime (now Cox Cable) in Alexandria, La. and Corpus Christi, and the Advertising Sales Manger for Comcast in Hattiesburg/Laurel, Miss. and Tuscaloosa, Ala.

He and his wife, Jennifer, currently reside in Edinburg with their daughters, Avery and Vivian.
