CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's tennis team looks for its second straight victory as they face the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
Last Time OutThe Vaqueros last faced the University of Maryland Baltimore County Retrievers at home where they picked up the 4-3 victory.
UTRGV trailed 2-3 in the match against UMBC but rallied to win the final three singles matches to pull out the victory.
After dropping the doubles point, the Retrievers won on court three to push their lead to 2-0 but
Dominique Ibarra got the Vaqueros on the board with a win on court four. UMBC then won on court one to make it 3-1 but
Dominique Esparza inched the Vaqueros closer with a win on court two.
Doris Aleksovska then rallied to win her match on court five before
Tara Donaho clinched the match for UTRGV with a win on court six.
Scouting the IslandersThe Islanders are coming off of a match against UMBC where they picked up the 7-0 win to remain perfect at 2-0 on the season. They also defeated Prairie View A&M 7-0 with both matches coming at home.
The Islanders return five from last year's squad led by senior's Maider Martin and Celia Rodriguez. Martin posted 17 singles wins last spring while Rodriguez added 14 singles wins of her own. They also teamed together in doubles to go 6-7 at the no. 1 spot.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi also brings back Jelena Dzinic, Kerry Galhos, and Judit Vives, who won seven or more singles matches last season.
The All-Time SeriesThe Vaqueros are 2-23 against the Islanders all-time in a series that dates back to 2000.
Both of these teams faced off twice last season with the Islanders coming away with 6-1 victories on February 8, 2015 and February 26, 2015.
The last time the Vaqueros defeated the Islanders was back on February 17, 2007 as they picked up the 4-3 victory in Corpus Christi. The Vaqueros will host the Islanders at the Orville Cox Tennis Center on February 26.

Reegan Greenwood currently ranks eighth in program history with 43 career singles wins. She is one win away from tying Wanda Beguelin (2011-14) for seventh all-time and just seven wins away from Tania Webster (1988-91) for fifth place. Ellen Nelissen (1991-95) tops the all-time list with 67 wins.
