LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's tennis team opens up Western Athletic Conference play as they face the Grand Canyon University Antelopes on Thursday at the NMSU Tennis Center at 9:30 a.m.
It will be the first of three matches this weekend for the Vaqueros, as they will also face New Mexico State on Saturday and Seattle U on Sunday.
Last Time OutThe Vaqueros (8-10) closed out their spring break trip with a 2-4 loss to Lipscomb at the LSU Tennis Complex.
The Vaqueros won the doubles point with wins from
Elliot Johnstone and
Andres Hernandez and from the duo of
Ethan Ammon and
Yehonatan Kaufman.
The Bison answered back in singles with wins on four of the six courts to clinch the match. Johnstone picked up a singles win for UTRGV with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Thais Minet on court five.
Juan Cruz Soria's match on court won went unfinished.
Scouting the AntelopesThe Antelopes are 8-6 on the season and are coming off of a 3-4 loss to Pacific back on March 12.
Some of the Antelopes' wins this season include wins over Santa Clara, Air Force, Montana, Nevada and Idaho State.
GCU has three student-athletes with eight wins, which ties for the team lead. Alexander Roggenkamp is 8-6 while playing all of his matches at the No. 3 spot, Mathieu Rojaonah is 8-2 while mainly playing at the No. 4 spot and Felix Schueller is 8-6 while playing all of his matches at the No. 2 spot.
In doubles, Schueller and Roggenkamp lead the way as they have teamed up for a 5-6 record at the No. 1 spot. Adrian Legarreta and Mitch Maroscher have posted a 4-4 record at the No. 2 spot.
The All-Time SeriesThe Vaqueros are 1-1 all-time against Grand Canyon in a series that dates back to 20014.
The Vaqueros opened last year's WAC Cluster with a 4-3 victory over GCU at the Orville Cox Tennis Center. GCU picked up the first win of the series back on February 28, 2014 as they defeated the Vaqueros 4-3 also at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
GlobetrottersThe Vaqueros currently have eight student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, Australia, Spain, Israel and Argentina.
