LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros men's tennis team opened Western Athletic Conference play with a 1-6 loss to the Grand Canyon University Antelopes on Thursday at the NMSU Tennis Center.
 
The Vaqueros (8-11) posted a win in doubles as the team of freshman Andres Hernandez and sophomore Elliot Johnstone defeated Mitch Maroscher and Meidy Chazeau 6-3 on court two but it was the Antelopes (9-6) who came away with the doubles point after winning on courts one and three.
 
Junior Juan Cruz Soria got the Vaqueros on the board with a win on singles court one. Soria dropped the first set 4-6 to Maroscher and then bounced back with a 6-3 win in the second that forced the tiebreaker where Soria won 10-4 to clinch the point.
 
The Antelopes won the rest of the singles matches to clinch the match.
 
The Vaqueros will next face the New Mexico State Aggies on Friday at 1 p.m. in their second conference match of the season.
