CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women's tennis closes out their regular season as they face the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
Last Time OutThe Vaqueros (9-9, 3-2 WAC) dropped a close one to the Texas State Bobcats on Saturday.
UTRGV jumped out in front as they took the doubles point from the Bobcats (8-12). The team of
Dominique Ibarra and
Doris Aleksovska defeated Pippa Carr and Ammaarah Tim 6-0 on court three.
After the Bobcats won on court two, the duo of
Reegan Greenwood and
Tara Donaho beat Ana Perez and Yadira Rubio 6-3 on court one to clinch the point.
In singles, the Bobcats tied the match with a win on court five. Ibarra regained the lead for the Vaqueros with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Katy Collins on court four. Texas State tied it again with a win on court six but Greenwood recorded a 7-5, 7-5 win over Eva Dench on court one to regain the lead once again.
The Bobcats won on court two to tie the match as it all came down to court three where
Natacha Minc fell behind in the match with a 5-7 loss in the first set. She bounced back with a 6-1 win in the second, which forced a decisive third set where she fell 3-6.
Scouting the IslandersThe Islanders are 20-0 on the season and are going for the first perfect season in program history. They have already clinched the Southland Conference regular season title and a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament.
Celia Rodriguez leads the Islanders with a 19-1 record in singles in the dual match season. She has mainly played in the No. 4 spot.
The Islanders have five others in double figures in wins with Maider Martin and Judit Vives adding 16, Jelena Dizinic has posted 14, Kerry Galhos has added 12 with Hortense Boscher adding 11.
Martin and Rodriguez have teamed to lead the Islanders in doubles as they have posted a 14-3 record at the No. 2 spot. Alexandra Belle and Galhos have posted a 14-1 record while playing mainly at the No. 3 spot.
The All-Time SeriesThe Vaqueros are 2-24 against the Islanders all-time in a series that dates back to 2000.
Both of these teams faced off earlier this season as the Islanders came away with the 6-1 win back on January 24. They met twice last season with the Islanders coming away with 6-1 victories on February 8, 2015 and February 26, 2015.
The last time the Vaqueros defeated the Islanders was back on February 17, 2007 as they picked up the 4-3 victory in Corpus Christi. The Vaqueros will host the Islanders at the Orville Cox Tennis Center on February 26.

Reegan Greenwood is currently fourth in program history with 53 career singles wins. She is now three wins behind Barbara Barrera (1988-90) for third place all-time. Ellen Nelissen (1991-95) tops the all-time list with 67 wins.
