No. 3 Men's Tennis Set to Face No. 2 New Mexico State For Spot in Championship Match

BROWNSVILLE – The No. 3 University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros looks to punch their ticket to the Western Athletic Conference Championship match as they take on the No. 2 New Mexico State Aggies in the semifinals on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Brownsville Tennis Center.
 
Last Time Out
The Vaqueros (11-13, 2-3 WAC) closed out their regular season with a 2-5 loss against the University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos on April 9.
 
Elliot Johnstone picked up a point for the Vaqueros after defeating Mike Psarros 6-7, 6-1, 10-2 on court four.
 
Yehonatan Kaufman recorded a 7-6, 6-7, 11-9 win over Vinh Pham on court five for the second point of the match.
  
Scouting the Aggies
The Aggies are 10-9 on the season and 4-1 in conference play. They are currently riding a three-match win streak with wins over UMKC, Chicago State and Western New Mexico.
 
The Aggies have three with 11 singles victories this spring season in Mauri Benitez, Christofer Gonclaves and Stijn de Haan. Enrique Asmar has also added 10 wins of his own.
 
Haan and Liam Goldberg lead the team with eight doubles victories while Gonclaves and Strahinja Trecakov have teamed up to post six double victories.
 
The All-Time Series
The Vaqueros are 3-6 all-time against the Aggies in a series that dates back to 1975.
 
These two teams faced off against each other earlier this season as the Aggies came away with the 7-0 victory on March 25 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
 
Globetrotters
The Vaqueros currently have eight student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico, Australia, Spain, Israel and Argentina.
 
Next Up
The winner of this match will punch their ticket to the WAC Championship match to face the winner of No. 1 Missouri-Kansas City and No. 4 Seattle U on Sunday at 1 p.m.
