Women’s Tennis Closes Out Home Stand Wednesday Against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis team wraps up their two-match home stand when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, as part of the South Texas Showdown, Presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
Last Time Out
UTRGV (1-4) fell last time out 1-6 to St. Mary's in their home opener on Sunday.
 
St. Mary's, who is ranked 10th in the ITA Division II rankings, swept through doubles and won the first three singles matches to clinch the match.
 
Dominique Ibarra came away with the lone point for UTRGV after picking up the 6-4, 6-1 win over Tyra Timm on court four.
 
Freshman Anastasia Belyaeva and junior Dominique Esparza battled by taking the second set to seven games on courts three and one but St. Mary's closed the match with wins on both courts.
 
Scouting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is getting their season started today against Prairie View A&M.
 
They return six from last year including junior Jelena Dzinic, seniors Kherry Galhos and Judit Vives.
 
They went 24-1 last season while advancing to the NCAA Regionals where they lost to No. 15 Stanford.
 
South Texas Showdown, Presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union
UTRGV currently leads the Showdown 17-12 after back-to-back wins by women's basketball.
 
The tennis matches will be the first Showdown events of the spring and will count for two points each.

The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 2-25 all-time against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a series that dates back to 2000.
 
These two teams faced off twice last season as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi picked up a 6-1 win on January 24 and then another 6-1 win on April 17.
 
The last time UTRGV beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was on February 17, 2007 when they picked up the 4-3 win in Corpus Christi.

UTRGV currently has seven student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the United States of America, France, Macedonia, Mexico, Russia and Spain.
 
Next Up
UTRGV will have a quick turn around as they hit the road to face SMU on Saturday at 5 p.m. and then UT Arlington on Sunday at 10 a.m.
