COLLEGE STATION – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's tennis team is set to face off against 25
th ranked Texas A&M University on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
Last Time Out
UTRGV's (2-5) snapped a two-match losing streak with a 4-3 win over St. Edward's University, who is ranked 24
th in the ITA Division II rankings, on Saturday.
UTRGV won the first two doubles matches to clinch the point.
Elliot Johnstone and Clément Sarradin defeated Charlie Shin and Chase Bartlett on court one while
Mateo Schmit and
Koby Jansen beat Will Drumwright and Logan Buignet on court two.
In singles, St. Edward's came out of the gates with wins on courts two and six to grab the lead but it was Sarradin who answered with a 7-6, 6-3 win on court four. Johnstone then picked up the straight set victory on court one before Jansen clinched it with a win on court three over Buignet.
Scouting Texas A&M
Texas A&M is 1-3 on the season after three straight losses followed their win in their season opener, which came against Rice.
They will be facing Texas Tech on Sunday at 1 p.m. before facing UTRGV.
Jordi Arconada, Aleksandre Bakshi, Arthur Rinderknech and Valentin Vacherot each have posted two singles victories on the season. Rinderknech has played all his matches at the No. 1 spot and already has 11 overall wins after going 9-3 in the fall.
In doubles, Bakshi and AJ Catanzariti lead the Aggies with a 2-2 record. They are the only doubles to post a victory on the season.
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 17-19 all-time against Texas A&M in a series that dates back to 1960.
Both of these teams played each other last season and it was Texas A&M who came away with the 5-2 win in College Station.
The last time UTRGV beat Texas A&M was back in 1983.
Next Up
UTRGV will be back in action on February 18 when they face Southern Mississippi in a neutral site match in Beaumont at 10 a.m.
