EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team scored two runs in the first inning, four in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth en route to a 9-0 victory over Texas Southern University (TSU) in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Junior
Ivan Estrella got UTRGV (3-0) on the board right away against TSU (0-3) starter
Michael Villanueva (0-1) with a two-run double in the first.
In the second, juniors
Cris Castillo and
Casey Danley came up with RBI-singles before senior
Jose Garcia doubled in Castillo. One out later, Danley scored on a balk to make it 6-0.
Garcia went 2-for-4 with a walk to finish the doubleheader 7-for-9.
Castillo came up with another RBI-single with two outs in the third.
In the fourth, Estrella grounded out to score a run and then senior
Joseph Collazo hit an RBI-single to make it 9-0.
That was plenty for graduate student
Connor Grant (1-0) who scattered one hit and two walks while striking out five in six innings.
Junior Harlingen South alum
Zach Martinez pitched three hitless innings, striking out four, for his first-career save.
UTRGV and TSU conclude this four-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. Any fans bringing five non-perishable food items to the game will receive a free ticket as part of the Strike Out Hunger Promotion. All donations benefit the Food Bank RGV. Gates open at 11 a.m.
