EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis team wraps up their two-match home stand as they host Sam Houston State on Sunday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
Admission is free and fans are encouraged to attend.
Last Time Out
UTRGV (1-9) dropped the first match of their home stand 2-5 to Lamar on Saturday.
Marine Darzyan and
Dominique Ibarra posted a doubles win on court two over Talisa Merchiers and Stephanie Marchena but it was Lamar who came away with the doubles point.
In singles, Ibarra and
Dominique Esparza were the only two to pick up a victory. Ibarra defeated Merchiers 6-0, 7-5 on court four while Esparza beat Anna Spengler on court two.
Scouting Sam Houston State
Sam Houston State is 2-6 on the season and is currently on a six-match losing streak.
They opened the season with back-to-back wins against Prairie View A&M and Dallas Baptist. Their rainout with UTRGV came in the midst of those two wins in mid-January.
Sam Houston State has three with three singles victory this season in Ema Barkovic, Carrie Casey and Khee Yen Wee. Diane Friedrichs, Fabienne Gettwart and Mila Milanovic all have recorded two wins each.
In doubles, Gettwart and Wee have teamed up to win four of their matches to lead Sam Houston State. They have only used three doubles combinations so far this season.
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 8-13 all-time against Sam Houston State in a series that dates back to 1986.
Both of these teams did not play each other last season but faced off against each other in 2015 and it was UTRGV pulling out the 4-3 victory in Huntsville.
Globetrotters
UTRGV currently has seven student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the United States of America, France, Macedonia, Mexico, Russia and Spain.
Next Up
UTRGV will hit the road again as they travel to Corpus Christi to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, Presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union on March 7.
