EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis team closed out their two-match home stand with a 2-5 loss to Sam Houston State University on Sunday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
UTRGV (1-10) got out to the quick lead in doubles as the team of sophomores
Marine Darzyan and
Dominique Ibarra defeated Fabienne Gettwart and Khee Yen Wee 6-0 on court two. Sam Houston State then answered with a win on court three to tie it up before winning on court one to take the doubles point.
Sam Houston State (3-6) opened singles with a wins on courts five, six and two to clinch the win. They added another victory on court one to make it 5-0 but UTRGV was not going to be shutout.
Freshman
Anastasia Belyaeva opened her match with Wee on court three with a 6-1 win in the first set before dropping the second 3-6. In the tiebreaker, Belyaeva dominated to clinch the singles win as she won 10-2 to get UTRGV on the board.
Ibarra followed suit with a 6-3, 7-5 win on court two over Carrie Casey to close out the match.
UTRGV will be back in action on March 7 when they travel to Corpus Christi to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, Presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
