DALLAS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley women's tennis team gets back on the road on Saturday when they face off against Southern Methodist University on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the SMU Tennis Complex.
Last Time Out
UTRGV (1-5) fell 1-6 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday as part of the South Texas Showdown, Presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union
With Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's win, they now lead the Showdown series 19-17.
UTRGV fell behind early as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi swept through doubles.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi won five of the six singles matches to grab the win.
Dominique Ibarra posted the lone point for UTRGV as she picked up the 6-4, 6-4 on court three over Louise Trigona.
Scouting SMU
SMU is currently 2-0 on the season after picking up two wins over Abilene Christian and Prairie View A&M on January 29.
They are scheduled to face off against Sam Houston State on Friday and Northwestern State on Saturday before their match with UTRGV.
SMU returns four from last year's squad including seniors Macie Elliot, Mary Wright and Dasha Sharapova and sophomore Ana Perez-Lopez. Each of the returners won double-digit singles last season with Sharapova leading the way with 16.
SMU also added sophomore Liza Buss who transferred from Iowa State where she went 23-8 in singles and was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team.
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 0-5 all-time against SMU in a series that dates back to 2002.
The last time these two teams met came back on January 21, 2011 when SMU picked up the 7-0 win in Dallas.
Globetrotters
UTRGV currently has seven student-athletes on the roster representing six different countries, including the United States of America, France, Macedonia, Mexico, Russia and Spain.
Next Up
UTRGV will be right back in action on Sunday when they head to Arlington to face the University of Texas at Arlington at 10 a.m. at the UTA Tennis Center.
