EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team won the series opener against the University at Buffalo (UB) 8-1 on Friday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Junior
Noah Lee led UTRGV (13-7) offensively by recording his second-straight multi-hit game and fourth of the season, going 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Senior
Jose Garcia and sophomore
Conrad McMahon each reached base three times. Garcia had a single, two walks and a career-high tying three runs scored. McMahon hit two singles with one walk, an RBI and a run scored.
Garcia walked to spark a three-run first, an inning capped by a Lee single off
Alec Tuohy (3-2).
Garcia hit his single in the second before scoring on a single by junior
Austin Siener that made it 4-0.
Lee's double followed a walk by freshman
Tyler Torres to start the third. Junior
Anthony Gomez drove in Torres with a single and then McMahon hit a groundball to bring home Lee to put UTRGV up 6-1.
That was it until the eighth, when Siener and junior
Ivan Estrella drew bases loaded walks to drive-in McMahon and Garcia.
That made a winner of junior
Carter Johnson (4-1), who struck out seven in 6.2 innings of work. He also got three double plays from his defense.
UB (4-10) scored its lone run in the third on a single by
Vinny Mallaro that drove-in
Alex Thrower, who went 2-for-4 with a walk.
UTRGV and UB play game two of this four game series on Saturday at 6 p.m. in a game that will be televised throughout Texas on Spectrum Sports Alt. channel 825. Gates open at 5.
