EDINBURG – Senior
Joseph Collazo delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10
th to give The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team a 5-4 victory over the University at Buffalo (UB) on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
With two outs in the bottom of the 10
th and tied at four, senior
Jose Garcia started the rally with a two out walk. Garcia then stole second to set up Collazo's walk-off hit, which came off of Greg Dunham (0-1) who took the loss.
UB (4-11) jumped on the board in the first against UTRGV starter
Josh Witherspoon as Ben Haefner reached on a one-out single and then moved to second on a walk to Vinny Mallaro. With runners at first and second, Kyle Brennan hit an RBI single to give UB the 1-0 lead.
UTRGV (14-7) finally broke through against UB starter Charlie Sobierawski in the bottom of the fourth. Junior
Ivan Estrella and freshman
Tyler Torres reached after being hit by a pitch and a walk. After a sacrifice bunt by junior
Noah Lee, sophomore
Anthony Gomez hit an RBI single to center field scoring Estrella from third. One out later, a wild pitch allowed Torres to score giving UTRGV the 2-1 lead.
Witherspoon at one point retired 10 batters in a row before allowing the first two runners aboard in the top of the seventh. After a wild pitch allowed a run to score, Alex Thrower gave UB the lead with an RBI double off of senior
Andrew Padron that made it 3-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Garcia reached on an error and Collazo followed with a walk. Junior
Austin Siener then delivered an RBI single that scored Garcia to score tying the game at three.
UB got a run in the top of the ninth after an RBI double by Haefner allowed Andrew Taft to score but UTRGV answered in the bottom of the ninth as Estrella hit an RBI single with runners at first and second setting up the walk-off win in the 10
th.
Sophomore
Zach Martinez (1-0) got the win after working around a runner at third with less than two outs in the 10
th as he struck out Connor Regan and induced a ground out by Taft.
UTRGV and UB will continue their four-game series Sunday at 12 p.m. in a game that will be televised on American Sports Network and throughout Texas on Spectrum Sports Channel 323. Gates open at 11 a.m.
