EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the University at Buffalo 6-4 on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium for their fifth straight victory.
With the game tied at four in the bottom of the eighth, senior
Jose Garcia started the inning with a walk before moving to second on a wild pitch. One out later, junior
Austin Siener delivered an RBI double scoring Garcia from second to take the lead for good. UTRGV (15-7) added a run later in the inning with a bases loaded RBI walk by junior
Noah Lee that made it 6-4.
Sophomore
Luis Acosta then pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the ball game for his fourth save of the season.
UTRGV got a quick scoreless top of the first inning from starter
Andrew Garcia and the offense decided to reward him with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. UTRGV loaded the bases after senior
Joseph Callazo, Siener and junior
Ivan Estrella all reached. Freshman
Tyler Torres followed with an RBI single that scored Collazo.
One out later, junior
Cris Castillo drew a bases loaded walk that allowed Siener to score the second run of the inning. Freshman
Conrad McMahon followed with a two-run double down the right field line scoring Estrella and Torres to make it 4-0 UTRGV.
UB (4-11) broke through in the top of the third as they loaded the bases against Garcia with three straight singles. Kyle Brennan followed with an RBI sacrifice fly that allowed Phillip Tomasulo to score. Vinny Mallaro then drove in Alex Thrower with an RBI single cutting UTRGV's lead in half 4-2.
UB tied things at four in the top of the fifth as they got a two-run triple from Brian Dudek.
Garcia got the no-decision after pitching seven and a third innings and allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out seven.
Sophomore
Zach Martinez (2-0) picked up the win after pitching a third of an inning and striking out the only batter he faced.
UTRGV and UB will wrap up their four-game series Monday at 7 p.m. in a game that will be televised throughout Texas on Spectrum Sports Channel 323. Gates open at 6 p.m.
