EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball dropped their second straight Western Athletic Conference game with a 7-4 loss to Utah Valley University on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
UVU (7-15, 2-0 WAC) got on the board in the top of the second against UTRGV starter
Josh Witherspoon. Jackson Overlund started the inning with a double and then after a walk to Callahan Moltzan Luke Jacketta hit a three-run home run to give UVU the 3-0 lead.
UVU got two more in the top of the third with RBIs from Overlund and Jake Berry that made it 5-0.
UTRGV (16-10, 0-2 WAC) got one of those runs back in the bottom of the third. Sophomore
Conrad McMahon and senior
Jose Garcia were both hit by a pitch to start the inning setting things up for senior
Joseph Collazo who delivered an RBI single to make it 5-1 UVU.
Trevor Howell got another run on the board in the top of the fourth with an RBI single that scored Kade Poulsen, who started the inning with a walk.
UTRGV answered in the bottom of the fourth as they took advantage of a miscue in right field. With runners at first and second, McMahon hit a single to right but a bobble of the ball allowed senior
Victory Garcia Jr. to score cutting into the UVU lead 6-2.
UTRGV got two more in the bottom of the sixth without the benefit of a hit. Three walks loaded the bases for McMahon who a sacrifice fly to center field that scored junior
Ivan Estrella from third. Collazo drove in the other run with an RBI fielder's choice to make it 6-4 UVU.
UVU added one more in the top of the seventh after an RBI triple by Moltzan to put a cap on the scoring.
UVU starter Jake Meyer (1-5) got the win after pitching five innings and allowing four runs on three hits while Eric Olguin earned his first save of the season after two innings of scoreless baseball.
Witherspoon took the loss after allowing five runs in two innings while walking three.
UTRGV and Utah Valley will wrap up their three-game series Sunday at 12 p.m. in a game that will be televised nationally through American Sports Network and throughout Texas on Spectrum Sports Channel 323. Fans who bring five cans of food will get a free ticket to the game. Gates open at 11 a.m.
