EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's tennis team closed out their home schedule with a 5-2 win over Laredo Community College, who is ranked sixth in the ITA junior college rankings, on Friday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
UTRGV (4-18) got out in front in doubles as the team of Koby Jansen and Clément Sarradin picked up a 6-3 win over Jason Roberts and Myrohn Miranda on court three. It came down to court one after UTRGV fell on court two and it was the team Yehonatan Kaufman and Mateo Schmit who came away with the 7-6 win over Juan Cruz Scoppetta and Victor Bravo for the 1-0 lead.
 
In singles, Sarradin extended UTRGV's lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Miranda on court four.
 
Laredo Community College (4-6) got their first point with a win on court three but UTRGV answered back as Schmit got a straight set 6-4, 6-3 win on court six over Filippo Bigardi. Laredo Community College got another win on court five but it wasn't enough as UTRGV closed out the win with wins on courts one and two.
 
Jansen opened his match with Scoppetta with a 6-2 win in the first set and then after dropping the second 4-6 bounced back with a 6-2 win in the final set. Jansen's win was the clincher for UTRGV.
 
On court two, Kaufman opened his match with a 4-6 loss in the first set but rallied in the second with a 7-6 win and then dominated the final set with a 6-1 victory.
 
UTRGV will be back in on April 7 when they face off against Chicago State in their second WAC cluster of the season.
