SEATTLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's tennis team looks to improve their conference record when they face Grand Canyon University on Saturday at the Amy Yee Tennis Center.
Last Time Out
UTRGV (5-18, 2-1 WAC) won their third straight match after defeating Chicago State 6-1 on Friday.
UTRGV got the doubles point after getting wins on courts one and three.
Yehonatan Kaufman and
Mateo Schmit picked up the win on court one while
Koby Jansen and Clément Sarradin won on court three.
In singles, UTRGV won on courts one, three, four, five and six. Jansen won on court one over Jiri Nouza while
Elliot Johnstone won on court three over Gonzalo Martinez.
Sarradin beat Rohan Wattley on court four with
Andres Hernandez picking up his first win of the season on court five over Christian Gonzalez and Schmit winning on court six over Cody Wurzelbacher.
Scouting Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon is 13-10 on the season and 2-1 in conference play after defeating UMKC 6-1 and Chicago State 7-0. Their only loss in conference play came against New Mexico State, where they fell 3-4.
Grand Canyon has four players with double-digit wins in Justin Cvitanovic, Lorenzo Fucile, Valentin Lang and Francois Musitelli. Fucile leads the team with a 17-4 record while playing mainly in the No. 4 spot.
Musitelli has played all but three matches at the No. 1 spot.
In doubles, Fucile and Lang lead the team with an 11-4 record while playing all but one match at the No. 3 spot. Grand Canyon has used eight doubles teams all season.
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 1-2 against Grand Canyon all-time in a series that dates back to 2014.
Both teams faced off last season where Grand Canyon won 6-1 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
The last time UTRGV beat Grand Canyon came on March 27, 2015 when they pulled out the 4-3 victory in Edinburg at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
