Baseball Drops 10-Inning Affair to Northern Colorado

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team fell to the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) 6-5 in 10 innings on Friday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

Senior Victor Garcia Jr. led UTRGV (25-24, 6-13 WAC) by going a season-best 3-for-5 with a career-high tying two doubles and two runs scored. Junior Ivan Estrella also went 3-for-5.

Senior Andrew Garcia pitched well for UTRGV, allowing just one earned run among five in eight innings.

Junior Carter Johnson (5-5) was the first man out of the bullpen, and after an eight pitch ninth and striking out the first two batters in the 10th, Brett Minnick singled on a 1-2 pitch before Evan Johnson doubled to give UNC (17-27, 6-13 WAC) the lead.

UTRGV put the tying run at third with one out in the bottom of the inning, but after an interference call for the second out, Jacob Howard struck out senior Joseph Collazo for his first save.

That made a winner of Dylan Shiraki (2-1), who struck out three in three scoreless innings of relief.

UTRGV led early, going up 1-0 on a single by Jose Garcia in the first and 3-0 on a single by freshman Tyler Torres and a groundout by sophomore Conrad McMahon in the second.

UNC scored four unearned runs with two outs in the third and then added a run in the fourth, but UTRGV pulled within one in the bottom of the inning on a McMahon single before tying the game on a single by sophomore Anthony Gomez in the sixth.
