EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team fell to the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) 6-5 in 10 innings on Friday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

Victor Garcia Jr. led UTRGV (25-24, 6-13 WAC) by going a season-best 3-for-5 with a career-high tying two doubles and two runs scored. Junior
Ivan Estrella also went 3-for-5.

Andrew Garcia pitched well for UTRGV, allowing just one earned run among five in eight innings.

Carter Johnson (5-5) was the first man out of the bullpen, and after an eight pitch ninth and striking out the first two batters in the 10
th,
Brett Minnick singled on a 1-2 pitch before
Evan Johnson doubled to give UNC (17-27, 6-13 WAC) the lead.
UTRGV put the tying run at third with one out in the bottom of the inning, but after an interference call for the second out,
Jacob Howard struck out senior
Joseph Collazo for his first save.
That made a winner of
Dylan Shiraki (2-1), who struck out three in three scoreless innings of relief.
UTRGV led early, going up 1-0 on a single by
Jose Garcia in the first and 3-0 on a single by freshman
Tyler Torres and a groundout by sophomore
Conrad McMahon in the second.
UNC scored four unearned runs with two outs in the third and then added a run in the fourth, but UTRGV pulled within one in the bottom of the inning on a McMahon single before tying the game on a single by sophomore
Anthony Gomez in the sixth.
UTRGV and Northern Colorado play the middle game of this three-game series on Saturday at 6 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in a game will be televised throughout Texas on Spectrum Sports channel 323.
Fans are asked to be in their seats by 5:35 for the senior night ceremony.
UTRGV Athletics is hosting a toy drive to benefit Aydan's Angels, a non-profit organization that collects new toys for hospitalized children in the Rio Grande Valley. Any fan donating a new, unwrapped toy will receive a free ticket.
