CORPUS CHRISTI – The team of
Yehonatan Kaufman and
Elliot Johnstone won the main draw doubles championship to lead the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's tennis team on Sunday at the Crossfit Contender Islander Open.
Kaufman and Elliot took on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's team of Francois and Okkie Kellerman in the championship match and it was a tight match all the way through. Both teams found themselves tied at six, which forced the tiebreaker, and it was UTRGV who pulled out the 9-7 win in the tiebreaker to clinch the championship.
Kaufman and Johnstone punched their ticket to the championship match after beating Incarnate Word's Francisco Bendana and Zach Vander Heiden 6-3 in the semifinals.
UTRGV will be back in action on September 30 when they travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships.
