LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team recorded its 12
th win of the season after defeating New Mexico State University (NMSU) 3-2 in overtime on Saturday at the New Mexico State Athletic Complex to close out the regular season.
Tied at 2-2, UTRGV (12-5-2, 6-1-1 WAC) got the golden goal from senior captain
Diandra Aliaga. She took the free kick from fellow senior captain
Tuva Rolstad Nilsen and headed the game-winner past NMSU goalie
Ashley Martin (1-11).
The 12 wins sets a new mark for most wins in a single season. It also puts UTRGV in second place in the Western Athletic Conference standings. UTRGV can clinch the No. 2 seed and a first round bye with a Seattle U loss at Utah Valley but a Seattle U win will drop UTRGV to third.
NMSU (2-16, 1-7 WAC) got the scoring started with a pair of goals in the first half by
Alexa Barrera as she scored at the 39:27 mark and the 44:54 mark giving them the 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
UTRGV got on the board at the 56:41 mark as senior
Kelzy Jepsen scored her first goal of the season.
Freshman
Emily Zapata then tied it at two at the 75:34 mark with her team leading 11
th goal of the season. Zapata's goal ties the program record for the most goals in a single season also held by her teammate
Sarah Bonney from the 2016 season.
UTRGV outshot NMSU 25 to 12 and 14 to 3 on goal.
UTRGV will head to Orem, Utah next week for the WAC Tournament, which starts on October 31 with the quarterfinals round.
