BEAUMONT – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis snapped a nine-match losing streak to Lamar University with a 5-2 victory on Saturday at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
 
The last time UTRGV (4-4) defeated Lamar came back on February 1, 2002 when it picked up the 6-1 victory at home.
 
UTRGV got things started when took two of three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. Senior Dominique Esparza and junior Doris Aleksovska started off with a 6-4 win over Amelie Vossgaetter and Kaela Di Giulio on court two.
 
Reigning Western Athletic Conference women's tennis doubles team of the week juniors Marine Darzyan and Dominque Ibarra clinched the point with a 6-1 win over Jasmin Buchta and Natalia Molina on court one.
 
Lamar (1-3) got on the board in singles play winning on court one to tie the match but Aleksovska answered back with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Molina on court five giving UTRGV the 2-1 lead.
 
Ibarra added to UTRGV's lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Vossgaetter on court three, which made it 3-1. With the win, Ibarra improves to 5-1 and is now on a five-match win streak. 
 
Lamar got another point with a win on court two before sophomore Anastasia Belyaeva clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Di Giulio on court four. Then it was freshman Lasya Patnaik closing out the match with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Milena Belianovich 7-6, 6-1 on court six. 
 
UTRGV is back in action on Sunday when it heads to Huntsville to face Sam Houston State at 12 p.m.
