Women's Tennis Visits Sam Houston State Looking for Third Straight Win Sunday

HUNTSVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team looks to push its win streak to three straight when it faces Sam Houston State on Sunday at 12 p.m. at the McAdams Tennis Center.
 
Last Time Out
UTRGV (4-4) snapped a nine-match losing streak to Lamar University with a 5-2 victory on Saturday at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
 
UTRGV got things started when took two of three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. Senior Dominique Esparza and junior Doris Aleksovska started off with a 6-4 win over Amelie Vossgaetter and Kaela Di Giulio on court two.
 
Reigning Western Athletic Conference women's tennis doubles team of the week juniors Marine Darzyan and Dominque Ibarra clinched the point with a 6-1 win over Jasmin Buchta and Natalia Molina on court one.
 
UTRGV then won courts five, three, four and six to clinch the win.
 
Scouting Sam Houston State
Sam Houston State is 3-2 heading into its Saturday matchup with New Mexico State. They have won two in a row after defeating UTSA 6-1 and Louisiana Tech 5-2.
 
Sam Houston has a pair of student-athletes who have recorded four singles victories in Carrie Casey and Lusine Chobanyan. Fabienne Gettwart and Sahaja Yamalapalli have recorded three singles victories.
 
As a team, Sam Houston State is 17-13 in singles.
 
In doubles, Sam Houston state is 6-5 with a pair of teams winning two matches.
 
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 8-14 all-time against Sam Houston State in a series that dates back to 1986.
 
Both teams met up last season but it was Sam Houston State who came away with the 5-2 victory at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
The last time UTRGV beat Sam Houston State came back on January 25, 2015 when it picked up the 4-3 victory in Huntsville.

UTRGV currently has eight student-athletes on the roster representing seven different countries, including the Macedonia, Mexico, Russia, Spain, India, Germany and Denmark.

UTRGV will be back in action on February 25 when it hosts the University of the Incarnate Word at 1 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
