HUNTSVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis had its two-match win streak snapped with a 3-4 loss to Sam Houston State University on Sunday at McAdams Tennis Center.
 
UTRGV (4-5) jumped out to the early lead with a pair of wins in doubles play. Juniors Marine Darzyan and Dominique Ibarra opened doubles with a 6-3 win over Carrie Casey and Mila Milanovic on court one.
 
Senior Dominique Esparza and junior Doris Aleksovska clinched the doubles point after defeating Fabienne Gettwart and Khee Yen Wee 6-2 on court two.
 
Sam Houston State (5-2) answered back in singles as it won on court four, five, three, and six to clinch the win.
 
Ibarra got ahead of Sahaja Yamalapalli on court three with a 6-3 win in the first set. In the second, Yamalapalli answered back with a 7-5 win but Ibarra took the final set 11-9 to get her sixth straight win.
 
Esparza closed out the match with a 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 win over Gettwart on court one.
 
UTRGV is back in action on February 25 when it hosts Incarnate Word at 1 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
