PATTERSON, La. – Junior
Alvaro Hernandez and junior
Pedro Lamadrid claimed the top two individual spots to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men's golf team to the Atchafalaya Intercollegiate Championship, hosted by Nicholls State, on Tuesday at the Atchafalaya at Idlewind.
In total, UTRGV had four golfers in the top 10 to help the team claim its 13
th tournament championship and first since the 2012 PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championships. UTRGV finished with a score of 881 (297, 288, 296), the 18
th lowest tournament score in program history.
Hernandez finished with a par 216 (73, 68, 75) to claim the individual medal among the 56 individuals competing for the 10 teams. Hernandez shot eight birdies and one eagle to become the 19
th individual medalist in program history and first since
Nicolas Platret won the 2015 Western Athletic Conference Championship.
Junior
Pedro Lamadrid short four birdies during the final round, including one on his final hole, to finish one-under 71 for the round and move up from 10
th place to second with a final score of 220 (76, 73, 71). Lamadrid finished with eight birdies during the tournament.
Hernandez and Lamadrid are the fourth pair of UTRGV teammates to claim the top two spots in a tournament and the first since the spring of 2009, when
Armen Kirakossian finished first and
Shane Pearce finished second at the Schreiner Spring Shootout.
Freshman
Tennoshin Ogawa shot nine birdies, including two in the final round, to finish tied for fifth with a score of 222 (71, 75, 76).
Sophomore
Luca Portelli shot six birdies, including two in the final round, to tie for 10
th with a score of 224 (77, 72, 75).
Senior
Ali Khazanbeik shot four of his seven birdies in the final round to tie for 34
th with a score of 234 (78, 81, 75).
UTRGV is back in action Feb. 26-27 at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational, hosted by Houston Baptist.
