Committee Inducts 2018 Athletics Hall of Fame and Hall of Honor Class

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Athletics Hall of Fame Committee inducted on Saturday the 2018 Athletics Hall of Fame, which includes the 1975 baseball team, former baseball player Ricky Brockway, former men's basketball player Mire Chatman, former women's track & field athlete Tonya (Bailey) Garcia, former women's basketball player Alex Gravel, and former women's tennis player Leah (Viloria) Hampton. The committee also inducted major supporters Dan and Terry Martinez into the Hall of Honor.
 
1975 Baseball Team
Posted the highest winning percentage (.900) in program history by going 63-7, the second-highest win total in program history and the third lowest loss total (lowest in seasons of at least 20 games) in program history … Advanced to NCAA South Central Regionals, going 2-2 and finishing runner-up to Texas … Team got off to 21-2 start, including program record 20-straight wins at the end of that start … Top four starting pitchers, Rod Edquist, Jesse Trinidad, Jim Proctor and Jack Ewing, three position players Ricky Brockway, Bobby Rutledge and Tommy Simpson, head coach Al Ogletree, and assistant coach Reggie Tredaway are all in the Hall of Fame.

"It's a privilege for me to be here and to see everyone," Treadaway said. "Coach Al Olgetree told me to let them play and you don't win 63 games by accident. What an enjoyable year that was. This team didn't just have talent but they were the toughest bunch of guys I had ever seen. My congratulations go out to the 1975 baseball team and coach Al, who I know wanted to be here. I am very proud of you."
 
Ricky Brockway, Baseball, 1974-75
1974 NCAA All-American … 1974 AABC All-American … 1974 All-District VI … 1975 NCAA All-American … 1975 AABC All-American … Scored then program record 68 runs in 1975 (now tied for seventh) … Stole then program record 61 bases in 1974 (now tied for fourth) and then 58 in 1975 (then second, now sixth) … Walked program record 72 times in 1975 (now third) … Recorded then program record 200 assists in 1975 (now second) … Scored then program record 125 runs in career (now tied for seventh) … Stole then program record 119 bases in career (now third) … Walked then program record 118 times in career (now fourth) … Had then program record 337 assists in career (now tied for ninth).
 
"I want to thank the UTRGV Department of Intercollegiate Athletics for putting all this together," Brockway said. "It was a privilege and honor to play on this team. We had a great team. It was important to us to be here and be a part of this school."
 
Mire Chatman, Men's Basketball, 2000-02
Earned NCAA Division I Honorable Mention All-American, Independent Player of the Year, Independent Defensive Player of the Year, All-Independent First Team, UTPA Male Student-Athlete of the Year, Basketball Times All-Southwest Region Team, CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major All-American Team, United States Basketball Writers Association All-District VII Team, NABC/Pontiac All-District IX Team and San Juan Shootout All-Tournament Team accolades in 2001-02 … Earned Independent Newcomer of the Year, Independent Defensive Player of the Year and All-Independent Second Team honors in 2000-01 … Ranks ninth all-time in program history in scoring (1,282 points), second in steals (183), fourth in field goal percentage (.504) and sixth in three-point percentage (.382) … Ranks first in single-season program history in steals (105), third in points (760), sixth in points per game (26.2) and free throws made (165), seventh in field goals (265) and steals (78), 10th in three-point shooting percentage (.435) … Had two of the top 10 scoring games in program history with 46 points against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (2/9/02) and 44 against New Mexico State (2/11/02) … Had two of the top five single-game steals totals with eight twice during the 2001-02 season.
 
"I would like to thank my family and friends," Chatman said. "I appreciate all their support over the years. I want to thank the University and Chris King. He really pushed me to come back and finish school. I would like to thank my coaches for molding me and I want to thank everybody who voted me in."
 
Tonya (Bailey) Garcia, Women's Track & Field, 1990-93
Outdoor track & field program record holder in the long jump with a mark of 20' 1.75" in 1993 … Made second longest triple jump in program history with a distance of 40' 7.5" in 1993 … Helped set what was then a program record (now fourth) in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 48.03 in 1991 … Set what was then an indoor track & field:  program record (now second) in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.51 … Ranks second all-time in the long jump with a mark of 18' 10.5" … Ran third fastest 60-meter dash in program history with time of 7.87 in 1992 … Recorded fourth longest triple jump in program history with mark of 38' 7.75".
 
"I want to say congratulations to all the other inductees," Garcia said. "To be able to be among you that have done so well is an honor and I am so thankful. This is an amazing University. I am so proud and so honored. I can't say enough to thank everyone that was a part of this."
 
Alex Gravel, Women's Basketball, 1998-03
Earned All-Independent First Team honors in 2002-03 and Second Team honors in 2000-01 and 1999-00 … Department Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 1999-00 … Held program record in scoring for nine years and currently ranks third with 1,227 points … Holds program records for career three-pointers (258), three-point shooting percentage (.366) and free throw shooting percentage (.827) … Ranks sixth all-time in field goals made (396), and tied for seventh in free throws made (177) and steals (145) … Holds program record for three-point shooting in a single season (.426 in 2002-03) while also ranking eighth (.367 in 2000-01) … Holds program record for free throw percentage in a single season (.892 in 2000-01) and three-pointers made in a game (9 vs. Texas State, 12/22/99) … Has three of the top six three-pointer totals for a single season with 76 in 1999-00 (second), 75 in 2002-03 (third), and 65 in 2000-01 (sixth).
 
"I will never forget this place and all the people I have met," Gravel said. "I am proud that my name will forever be associated with this University. Thank you to all my teammates, coaches and to everyone who put this event together."
 
Leah (Viloria) Hampton, Women's Tennis, 1987-91
Program record holder in overall career wins (109) … Graduated as program record holder for career singles wins (64, now ranks second) … Graduated ranked third in career doubles wins (45, now ranks fifth) … Led team to 1989 American South Conference Championship … No. 1 singles player all four years … 1989-90 Academic All-American South honoree … Earned Ann LaMantia award as a senior.
 
"I would like to thank the board for selecting me with such a great group of student-athletes," Hampton said. "I am humbled. I would like to thank my family and my former teammates. Their support means a lot. I will always be grateful to my coach David Cross for letting me play on his team. He gave me a chance to play the sport I love at another level. Thirty years later, we are back to where it all started and I am so grateful for that." 
 
Hall of Honor
Dan and Terry Martinez
Made planned donation of first seven-figure gift in program history ($1 million) in June … Founding members of the Champions Club … Long-time supporters of athletics … Dan is a Pan American University graduate (1978) while Terry started her academic career at Pan Am … Both are Rio Grande Valley natives who are now active in the Houston-area alumni association.
 
"I want to thank my husband Dan for all his hard work," Terry Martinez said. "Without his hard work, we wouldn't be standing here today. To the committee, thank you for this honor. We are very grateful. Being able to be here today, I want to say to everyone to give back to the University and make a contribution. It makes a difference to a student so that they can be successful in life and make their dreams come true."
