CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team kicks off a three-match road trip as it faces Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
Last Time Out
UTRGV (6-5) picked up the 4-3 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi back on February 27.
It was the first time since 2007 that UTRGV beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
UTRGV got this started on a good note as it won the doubles point for the fourth straight match. The team of
Dominique Ibarra and Marine Darzyan started doubles off with a 6-0 win over Jelena Dzinic and Carolina Bulatovic.

Doris Aleksovska then clinched the point with a 6-2 win over Louise Trigona and Marina Vicens Miguel.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tied the match at one with a win at the No. 2 spot but Ibarra gave UTRGV the lead once again with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bulatovic. It was her eighth straight singles win as she improved to 8-1 on the season.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tied the match once again with a win at the No. 1 spot before Anastasia Belyaeva give UTRGV the lead right back with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Trigona.
After Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tied the match once again with a win at No. 5, it all came down to Lasya Patnaik at No. 6 where she beat Maria Soler Valverde 7-6, 3-6, 6-1.
South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union
UTRGV and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi are currently tied in the showdown standings with 20.5 points apiece.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has won the last event after finishing ahead of UTRGV at the Women's Golf UTRGV Invitational.
The next South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, will be on March 20 when the baseball teams face off in Corpus Christi.
Scouting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is 5-4 on the season after recording a pair of wins against UTSA and Incarnate Word.
The Islanders other three wins came against Prairie View A&M (twice) and Texas A&M Kingsville.
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 3-27 all-time against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a series that dates back to 2000.
Both of these teams met on February 27 and it was UTRGV who came away with the 4-3 win. The win snapped a 14-match losing streak to for UTRGV against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The previous win against the Islanders came back in 2007.

UTRGV currently has eight student-athletes on the roster representing seven different countries, including the Macedonia, Mexico, Russia, Spain, India, Germany and Denmark.
Next Up
UTRGV will be back in action on March 12 when it travels to Houston to face the University of Houston at 3 p.m. at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.
