Men’s Tennis Looks For Second Straight WAC Win Saturday

CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team looks to make it two straight Western Athletic Conference wins as it takes on Kansas City on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the CSU Tennis Courts.
 
Last Time Out
UTRGV (10-10, 1-2 WAC) recorded its first WAC win of the season after defeating Chicago State 5-2 on Friday. 
 
UTRGV only needed to win one doubles match to take the point and it got on court two. Elliot Johnstone and Yehonatan Kaufman defeated Rohan Wattley and George Both 6-4 to give UTRGV the 1-0 lead. 
 
UTRGV added a win by default on court six and then got wins from Zane Kohrs, Clément Sarradin, and Kaufman. 
 
The win improved UTRGV to 4-0 against Chicago State all-time.
 
Scouting Kansas City
Kansas City is 8-9 on the season and 3-0 in conference play. UMKC clinched a share of the WAC Regular Season Championship with a win over New Mexico State on Friday. 
 
UMKC defeated Chicago State, Seattle U and Grand Canyon in the first WAC Cluster of the season.
 
Diego Giraldo leads UMKC with a 10-6 singles record. Airam Castellano, Tom Kruse, and Alex Pozo have recorded nine singles victories this spring. UMKC as a team is 46-52 in singles play.
 
In doubles, UMKC is 23-26 on the season with Castellano and Pozo leading the way with a 10-5 record. Giraldo and Kruse are the only other doubles team to win more than one match for UMKC posting an 8-7 record.
 
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 3-3 all-time against UMKC in a series that dates back to 2014. 
 
Both teams faced off last season and it was UMKC with the 4-3 win in Phoenix.
 
The last time UTRGV defeated UMKC came back in 2015 where they won twice that season, including in the WAC Tournament.

UTRGV currently has nine student-athletes on the roster representing five different countries, including the France (Dennis Boisseau, Clément Sarradin), United States (Jake Davidson, Zane Kohrs, Michael Loyd), Australia (Koby Jansen, Elliot Johnstone), Israel (Yehonatan Kaufman), and Argentina (Mateo Schmit).

UTRGV will close out the regular season when it faces Seattle U on Sunday at 9 a.m. at the CSU Tennis Courts.
