EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis teamclosed out its home portion of its schedule with 6-1 win over Laredo Community College, who is ranked fourth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association junior college rankings, on Tuesday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
With the win, UTRGV improved to 7-2 at home this season.
 
"We had a goal at the beginning of our season to win at least seven home matches and this was our seventh," UTRGV head coach Dann Nelson said. "We hit our goal and I am really happy about that. Laredo is a tough team. They aren't going to give you any free points or give you the match. We had to go out there and earn it and everyone who was out there earned it today."
 
UTRGV (9-10, 0-2 WAC) got out to the early lead as it took the doubles point. The team of junior Yehonatan Kaufman and senior Elliot Johnstone picked up the 6-2 win over Thomas Golden and Alberto Mello on court two. 
 
Sophomore Clément Sarradin and freshman Zane Kohrs then clinched the point with a 7-5 win on court three over Jason Roberts and Diego Cruz Vespa on court three.
 
In singles, Kohrs kept things rolling for UTRGV after a 6-0, 6-3 win on court five over Mello and then it was sophomore Mateo Schmit coming through with the 6-4, 6-1 win on court six to making the score 3-0 UTRGV.
 
Sophomore Dennis Boisseau trailed in his first set 2-5 over Juan Cruz Scoppetta but battled back to win the first set 7-5 before pulling out the victory with a 6-4 win in the second, which clinched the win for UTRGV.
 
Kaufman pushed UTRGV's lead to 5-0 after a 7-6, 6-1 win over Manuel Pilotto on court two. Laredo Community College got their lone point with a win on court three but sophomore Clément Sarradin closed out the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win on court four.
 
UTRGV will be back in action on April 13 when it travels to Chicago to face Chicago State in the second Western Athletic Conference cluster of the season.
