COLLEGE STATION – Senior
Omer Almog and sophomore
Abraham Chirchir finished 1-2 in the men's 3,000-meter run to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) indoor track & field teams at the Ted Nelson Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M, on Friday at Gilliam Indoor Track & Field Stadium at McFerrin Athletic Center.
Almog finished in a time of 8:18.70, the second-fastest time in program history, while Chirchir recorded a time of 8:24.29, the fourth-fastest time in program history. Almog and Chirchir combined to earn 18 points for the men's team, which finished with 48 points to come in sixth out of 16 at the meet.
The women's team scored 46 points to finish sixth out of 17. UTRGV scored a team-high 18 points in the shot put as freshman
Samariae Bonds finished second with a throw of 14.30 meters, the third-best in program history, for eight points. Sophomore
Alexandrea Hurst came in third with a throw of 14.08 meters, the sixth-best in program history, for six points. Senior
Diamond Thomas placed fifth with a throw of 13.56 meters for four points.
The women also had three-point getters in the 3,000-meter run, as freshman
Dorcas Koech finished third with a time of 10:19.24 for six points, freshman
Mercy Chelangat came in fourth with a time of 10:21.05 for five points, and junior Edinburg North alum
Bryana Rios placed seventh with a time of 10:27.43 for two points.
In total, UTRGV had nine performances that entered the record books.
On the men's side, senior Juarez Lincoln-alum
Yariel Matute recorded the second-fastest 400-meter dash in program history with a time of 48.22, finishing second for eight points. Junior
Christian Hall-Gardner posted the fourth-best weight throw in program history with a mark of 17.29 meters to finish fifth and score four points.
On the women's side, senior
Idatonye Cheetham-West tied for the third-best long jump in program history with a distance of 5.75 meters, finishing sixth for three points. Cheetham-West followed that up with the fourth-fastest 60-meter dash in program history with a time of 7.81 seconds to finish 14

Natalie Garza finished in a second-place time of 12:33.92, the fifth-fastest in program history, to earn eight points.
