LUBBOCK – Junior Ashley Hughes broke the program record for the women's 400-meter dash to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) indoor track & field sprinters during the first day of the Texas Tech Open on Friday at the Sports Performance Center.
 
Hughes finished with a time of 56.14, breaking the 11-year old record of 56.36 previously held by Vanessa Brown. Senior Destiny Rutherford was right behind with a time of 57.24, the fourth-fastest in program history.
 
UTRGV had a strong showing in the men's 400-meter dash as well, as senior Juarez Lincoln-alum Yariel Matute recorded the second-fastest time in program history at 48.08 seconds. Freshman Brownsville Veterans Memorial alum Max Carmona posted the seventh-fastest time in program history at 49.09.
 
In the 60-meter dash, UTRGV added two new entries into the top five in program history, as senior Idatonye Cheetham-West finished in 7.73 seconds, the third-fastest time on the women's side, and freshman Yashawn Hamilton finished in 7.05 seconds, tied for the fifth-fastest time on the men's side.
 
UTRGV is set to compete in six events to close out the meet on Saturday starting at 11:45 a.m.
