EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team defeated Lamar University 4-3 on Sunday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center for Center for its first win of the season.
UTRGV (1-3) trailed 2-3 with two singles matches left to play as freshman
Nethmi Waduge came through with the win on court five over
Natalia Garcia Molina. Waduge dropped the first set 0-6 before rallying back with a 6-1 win in the second and a 6-4 win in the third.
The win by Waduge tied the match at three apiece setting up the match on court four as the winner-take-all. Senior
Marine Darzyan dropped the first set to
Laura Sola 4-6 but tied the match with a 6-4 win in the second. Darzyan jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead in the third and fought off a late charge by Sola to take the set 6-3 clinching the win.
Lamar (1-7) opened singles with a win on court six but senior
Dominique Ibarra picked up her second straight win with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over
Jasmin Buchta on court one. Lamar also got wins on court three and five before UTRGV's final two singles wins.
UTRGV used doubles to jump out to the early 1-0 lead as the team of freshmen
Sandra Putz and
Katarina Sasaroga picked up the 6-2 win over Sola and
Sanja Jolic on court three. Darzyan and Ibarra clinched the point with a 6-2 win over Buchta and
Amelie Vossgaetter on court one.
UTRGV will be back in action on February 16 when it travels to Fort Worth to face off against Texas Christian University at 1 p.m.
