CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team closed out the H-E-B Tournament of Champions with a tough 3-4 loss to New Mexico State University on Saturday at the H-E-B Tennis Center.
 
UTRGV (2-10) and New Mexico State (5-4) went toe-to-toe in singles play. New Mexico State opened with wins on courts one and three before senior Yehonatan Kaufman answered with a victory over Louis Menard on court two. Kaufman fell behind early after dropping the first set 3-6 but bounced back with a 6-4, 6-2 in the second and third for UTRGV's first point.
 
UTRGV then got another win as sophomore Zane Kohrs defeated Enrique Asmar on court five. Kohrs opened with a 6-3 win in the first set before falling 1-6 in the second. He then clinched his win with a 7-5 victory in the third set.
 
Junior Mateo Schmit added another win for UTRGV as he defeated Nicolas Buitrago on court six. After falling in the first set, Schmit came back to win the second and third sets 6-5, 7-6 before New Mexico State won on court four to close out singles. 
 
New Mexico State took the doubles point with wins on courts one and two, which helped them clinch the win.
 
UTRGV will be back in action on February 28 as it opens up its home portion of the schedule when it hosts Laredo Community College at 1:30 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
