EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team dropped the finale of a three-game series to UMass 14-11 on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
 
UTRGV (11-5) and UMass (4-3) combined for 25 runs on 23 hits, 24 walks, five hit batsmen and four errors against 17 pitchers. They also combined to leave 28 runners on base.
 
Senior Anthony Gomez led UTRGV by going 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, two walks and a career-high five RBI. Junior Elijah Alexander also had multiple hits, going 2-for-5 with two RBI and a career-high three runs scored. Senior Andy Atwood finished 2-for-5 with a home run, a walk, two RBI and two runs scored.
 
Logan Greene led UMass by going 2-for-5 with a home run, a walk, five RBI and two runs scored. Anthony Videtto finished 2-for-5 with two walks, three RBI and two runs scored. Colin Shapiro went 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored. Nolan Kessinger went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
 
Both teams scored four runs in the second. UMass scored on a grand slam by Connor Smith and UTRGV responded with an Atwood RBI-single and a Gomez three-run triple.
 
In the third, Gomez again came up with the bases loaded, this time against Jack Steele (1-0),delivering a two-run double to put UTRGV up 6-4.
 
UMass put two on with two out in the fourth against junior Kevin Palm (2-1), setting up a Shapiro RBI-single. After a walk, Videtto hit a two-run single and Greene hit a three-run home run to put UMass up 10-6.
 
UTRGV rallied in the sixth on an Alexander RBI-single and a two-run pinch-hit double by Nick Contreras to make the score 10-9.
 
In the seventh, however, UMass got those three runs back on a Videtto bases loaded walk and a Greene two-run single.
 
UMass added a run in the eighth on a Shapiro single.
 
UTRGV got that run back in the bottom of the inning on a long home run to left by Atwood, his second of the season.
 
UTRGV scored on an Alexander sacrifice fly and loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but Daniel Livnat got the final out for his first save.
 
UTRGV hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on $2 Tuesday at 7 p.m. The first 200 fans in attendance will receive #BeatCorpus t-shirts. General admission tickets and most concession items will cost $2 or less. Gates open at 6.
