EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team extended UTRGV's lead in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union with a 9-4 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
With the win, UTRGV (12-5) picks up three points to push its lead to 26.5 points to 18.5 points in the showdown standings.
Corpus Christi (11-7) struck in the first against graduate student
Conner Dotson on an RBI single by
Nick Anderson and then two outs later made it 3-0 with a two-run double by
Luke Marbach.
UTRGV answered back in the third as redshirt junior
Andy Atwood started the inning with the walk. One out later, he moved to second on a single by junior
Conrado Diaz and then came in to score on an RBI by junior
Coleman Grubbs. After a single by junior
Nick Contreras, senior
Tyler Torres followed with a two-run single that drove in Diaz and Grubbs tying the game at three.
That got Dotson off the hook as he allowed just those three runs in four innings pitched while also striking out four in his second start of the season.
UTRGV's bullpen kept Corpus Christi at bay as it combined for five innings of relief and allowing just one run. The offense returned the favor with a run in the fifth inning as junior
Elijah Alexander reached third on an error before scoring on a wild pitch giving UTRGV the 4-3 lead.
UTRGV added another run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single by Torres that scored Diaz, who started off the inning with a leadoff double, which made it 5-3.
In the bottom of the eighth, UTRGV loaded the bases and with two outs Alexander put the game out of reach with a grand slam.
Zach Martinez (1-0) picked up the win after pitching a scoreless fifth inning while striking out two.
UTRGV will hit the road for eight straight starting with a three-game series at Kansas State starting on Friday at 6 p.m. The next showdown events will happen tomorrow as UTRGV men's and women's tennis host matches at the Orville Cox Tennis Complex.
