EDINBURG– The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team fell 2-4 in a hard fought match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part the of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Wednesday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
 
With UTRGV loss, Corpus Christi gains three more points in the showdown standings. UTRGV continues to hold on to the lead 26.5 points to 24.5 points. 
 
UTRGV (3-8) found themselves trailing after doubles as Corpus Christi (8-3) won on courts three and one. Seniors Michelle Walker and Doris Aleksovska were leading 5-4 in their match against Kei Kato and Myu Kageyama on court two before it was stopped when the point was clinched.
 
In singles, senior Dominque Ibarra tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Carolina Bulatovic on court one. 
 
After Corpus Christi won on court four, it was freshman Nethmi Waduge who came through with the 6-3, 6-3 win over Kageyama on court five which tied the match at 2-2. 
 
Corpus Christi followed with a win on court six to regain the lead. On court two, senior Marine Darzyan opened her match with Kato with a 6-4 win in the first set before falling 3-6, 3-6 in the final two. 
 
Senior Michelle Walker's match on court three went unfinished in the third set after Corpus Christi clinched the win. Walker started things with a 6-4 win in the first before falling in a tiebreaker 6-7 in the second. She was down 4-5 in the third when it was stopped. 
 
UTRGV will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Southern Miss at 10 a.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
