SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's and women track & field team opened the UTSA Invitational with the throwers group earning six top-five finishes on Friday at Park West Athletics Complex.
 
Competition started with the women's hammer throw where senior Diamond Thomas got things rolling for the throwers group as she finished in fifth place with a throw of 48.28 meters. Freshman and Weslaco alum Ciera Gonzalez came in seventh with a throw of 41.18 meters while Juvae Williams finished in eighth place with a throw of 40.67 meters.
 
In the women's shot put, Thomas finished in fourth with a throw of 13.98 meters, which ranks fifth furthest in program history. Freshman Samariae Bonds hit a mark of 13.46 meters as she finished in fifth place while Taylar Kregness came in seventh with a throw of 12.26 meters and Economedes alum Brittany Cantu finished in eighth after a throw of 11.17 meters.
 
On the men's side, junior and PSJA Memorial alum Michael Gonzalez posted a fifth place finish with a throw of 56.62 meters while senior Jonathan Ojeda finished in sixth place after a throw of 46.39 meters. Sophomore and Palmview alum Ricky Espinoza finished in seventh with a throw of 44.80 meters.
 
Gonzalez led the trio in the shot put as he finished in third place with a throw of 15.72 meters. Espinoza finished in fifth after a throw of 13.66 meters and Ojeda came in seventh with a throw of 11.44 meters. 
 
UTRGV will wrap up the UTSA Invitational on Saturday as events start at 11 a.m. with the pole vault.
