Baseball Picks Up Showdown Victory Over Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6-2 in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, on Tuesday at Chapman Field.
 
UTRGV (14-7) earned three points for winning the game and an additional point for winning the attendance point 1,591-to-551. UTRGV now leads Corpus Christi (14-9) 30.5-to-24.5. There are six points still available as the track & field teams face off in a dual meet on April 6 at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
 
Five UTRGV pitchers combined to keep Corpus Christi off the board over the first eight innings, striking out five while scattering seven hits and three walks.
 
Junior Gabe Constantine started and recorded the first four outs. Junior Ricky Arevalo followed by striking out two in 1.2 innings. Junior Kevin Palm pitched the next two innings, striking out one. Senior McAllen Memorial alum Juan Carreon II (1-0) took the ball into the eighth with 2.2 innings of relief and two strikeouts to earn his first-career win. Senior Harlingen South alum Zach Martinez recorded the final four outs.
 
Corpus Christi scored twice in the ninth on a Steven Rivera-Chiji double and an Enrique Sanchez Jr. double play before senior Nikki Rowe alum Ryan Jackson recorded the final out.
 
Senior Anthony Gomez gave UTRGV an immediate lead with his third home run of the season in the first inning against Mason Hopkins (1-1).
 
Junior Tyler Torres added an RBI-single in the fourth and junior Coleman Grubbs hit an RBI-single in the fifth.
 
UTRGV scored twice in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by junior Andy Atwood and a wild pitch that scored sophomore Mercedes alum Oliver Closner IV.
 
Gomez capped the scoring with an RBI-single in the ninth.
 
Gomez finished 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored. Junior Christian Sepulveda went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
 
UTRGV opens Western Athletic Conference play with a three-game series at Sacramento State starting Friday at 9 p.m.
