EDINBURG – Sophomore
Jacob Hirsh hit a walk-off two-run double in the eighth to send The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team to an 11-1 victory by virtue of the 10-run rule over the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Game two is set to start at 5:30 p.m.
Hirsh had a career-high tying three hits, including a career-high three doubles and a career-high three RBI. Two other UTRGV (17-10, 3-2 WAC) batters had multi-hit games, including junior
Christian Sepulveda, who went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, two RBI and a run scored, and junior
Coleman Grubbs, who went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.
UTRGV pushed the game out of reach in the sixth, when, with the score 2-0, UTRGV sent 11 batters to the plate, using five hits, an error, a walk and a hit batsman to score seven times. UTRGV started the inning by putting two on with one out against
Connor Anderson (0-6). Grubbs laid down a bunt, but the throw to first went into right field, allowing two runs to score and Grubbs to go to third. Junior
Tyler Torres followed with an RBI-single, and one out later, junior
Nick Contreras was plunked, setting up RBI-singles by Sepulveda and freshman
Jacob Flores. Then, after a wild pitch scored Sepulveda, Hirsh hit his second double of the inning to drive-in the final run.
Senior
Jerred Quartier (2-0) made the runs stand up, pitching a career-high seven innings and striking out six without a walk while allowing one run on nine hits.
The run came with two outs in the seventh on a
Jack Pauley single.
UTRGV took the lead in the second, as a run scored when junior
Elijah Alexander hit into a double play and then another run scored on a Sepulveda double.
Three UNC (5-17, 2-3 WAC) hitters had two hits, including Pauley,
Billy Moreland and
Andrew Vela.
